Bei „Back To My Planet“ und „Little Crime“ darf am Ende der Scheibe sogar noch der gute alte, breitbeinige Rock‘n’Roll vorbeischauen, die Matte schütteln und auf der Klampfe solieren. The new line-up as of course something to do with that idea, but also the music sounds fresh and young. For 38 minutes long you can hear a modern version of Punkrock. High speed, adrenaline infused rock with a melodic punch, rocking guitars and good-looking female singer. The world we live in is there basis for inspiration and you can clearly hear that in their lyrics. Add to that some well-known speeches, top-notch quality and you know what you might expect. They dropped the horror punk label from the past and became a fully-grown (adult) punk band overnight.

Shakey Sue is comfortable in her role as female singer of the band and she knows how to handle the boys without doubt. If they produce some hardcore riffs or if they come up with something poppy Sue is always there to catch the song and make something special out of. Check out I’m Away or Your Call before you indulge yourself in this new album, but I’m pretty sure that in the end you will agree with me, this is rock and roll inspired punk at its best.
For original article click hereThe Hellfreaks tag:www.thehellfreaks.com,2005:Post/42720872016-07-10T13:35:51+02:002017-01-13T02:35:10+01:00The Hellfreaks Astoria review by Underdog Fanzine (DE)
UNDERDOG FANZINE: THE HELLFREAKS
Astoria LP/CD
Wolverine Records

For original article click here
The Hellfreaks tag:www.thehellfreaks.com,2005:Post/42627842016-07-04T20:50:56+02:002018-07-30T08:13:00+02:00If you are the interviewer ...We answered a looooot of interviews in the past.
3. Morgan asked: "How has your format change been effecting your fan base, do you think it's more accessible now that your moving a bit away from that psycho/horror genre or do you think your origional fans may be put off by the change."
Both. I wanted to change our genre because I didn’t wanted to repeat myself. After 2 psycho/horrorpunk albums I had the feeling that I can’t make something new closed in this „box”. I haven’t thinking about the reaction of the fanbase, cause even you are all important to me, but I’m just not that kind of person, who can be like others wanted to having me.
Now after the release and after touring with the new album it turned out so much better than we expect. We found new people and also the „old” fanbase seems to like it! Our old stuff belonged to the new-psycho-wave which is influenced pretty much by punkrock – what means we didn’t went that far with Astoria from our roots. Just a step forward and not backward in my point of view.
On the other side: I’m totaly fine with people who don’t like the new sound. If they are only into psycho/horrorpunk, they are totally right: cause this is no more billy anymore.

4. Mike asked: "Will you post a picture with pigtails?"
It’s not planned yet.

5. Fred asked: "Are you close to the kustom kulture & bikers ? And would you like to have a bike ?"
I’m always open for new things. ;-)

15. Shawn asked: "What are your top five movies?"
I totally love fantasy movies. So my top five movies are all LOTR movies and The Hobbit, which are already more than 5.

16. Eric asked: "Best punk band ever?"
That’s like asking „ Who is the most beautiful girl ever?”. There is no answer for this. But I think from the new punk bands Barb Wirde Dolls are those who have the authentic spirit.

25. Hiroaki: "Will u come over for a dinner w/ me in Japon?"
We have to make it to Japan first. After that we can discuss the details.

26. Renáta kérdezte: "Lesz-e idén magyarországi koncert?"
Ez valóban egy nagyon jó kérdés.
28. Made asked: "Which was your first purchased record?"
Green Day: Dookie

29. Justin asked: "What's the most perverted memory's from the band?"
The connection between bandmembers is kind of pervert cause you know way more about each other than what you would like to know. But on the other hand, there is no memory that I could put in your category.

30. Timber asked: "Biggest influence (both musically & not), is?"
I already answered the first part of it. My not-musically influence is my own mind, the life that surrounds me, the society, politics, tragedies, sunshine, hate and love, everything.

How did the angry young men with safety pins in their noses become monster admirers? Studded-chained accessories, second-hand clothes, whitewashed faces.

The 1960s gave birth to surf rock, whose songs evoked idyllic California sunshine, palm trees and pastel colours; the 70s saw the advancement of garage rock and disco; then by the middle of the same decade punk rock burst in, blasting and rejecting everything. Everything, even what it drew from: its debauched, loud, and raw voice repre-sented the total opposite of pop and rock sounds dulled by continuous practice. Its flame kept swelling and mutating over the years and spread from England through America to Japan, finally breeding – beyond the rebellious youth, with their nostrils pierced with safety pins and angry at ab-solutely everything – stylish monsters.

From the mid-70s punk rock was probably the most important harbinger of anger, aggression, of the breaking down political and sexual taboos and the DIY movement in the music scene. Its appearance turned the entire scene upside down, of course with varying intensity, depending on the country. The 1960s devoured young people with garage rock and surf rock, while punk gave some sort of a reaction to these genres and to the untrained musicians. It was simpler, more explicit and raw. The punks rebelled against everything popular. They rejected, judged and denied the garland-wearing hippy era, the glittery disco, but even rock performers who had become commer-cial and boring. Its music was fast and utterly subversive, lacking any compromise or frippery, and constituted a fitting background music for the world hungry for modern solutions, its impacts lingering on in the music world to this day.

But the emergence of punk is not only due to garage and surf rock (or to what later came to be known as “proto -punk”) but also to styles such as the polka dot and stripes of rockabilly of the 1950s, as well as to hard rock, and the platform-booted glam rock . Punk as a genre with a political and ideological background (anti-war sentiments, free thinking, intentional non-compli-ance with social expectations, and the principle of “never sell yourself”) soon became a global sentiment, which of course was not exempt from clichés or preconceptions. Beyond the maximum three chords in the music and the critical, harsh lyrics, it manifested in the appearance as well: leather clothes, studded and chained accessories, torn, then patched up clothing acquired mainly in second-hand shops, tattoos sometimes bearing political messages, and a mohawk – these all be-came the attributes of being punk.

Will be continued ...

"A few years ago a band i had the great pleasure of supporting on their debut UK show split up, I was gutted for them because i knew they worked very hard to build up a reputation.... However that reputation brought them back to us. Last year the band fronted by Shakey Sue returned with a new line up to do a American tour. I was gutted that the line up had changed tho, Until i heard Why Do You Wanna Talk.....

Disclaimer- They have left the Horror Punk behind, But this is my website so if i want to review them I will!

As i said about the days of Circus of Shame seem behind them Sue backed up with a fresh sounding band they now smack you in the face with a force that you wont expect if you judge them from the other albums.

Moving very much in a Riot Girl style it suits Sue's vocals perfect. So much more than the Horrorbilly style, I always felt this would be the direction they would head and im so fucking pleased they have.

I firmly believe that this new Hellfreaks line up will only grow in strenght and can become a name you won't forget in a hurry.

Ok they are not Horror Punk any more but you know something? Good, that was holding them back a little, Now just sit back and watch them explode."
